‘A Silent World’ - Exhibition Tour for Schools
September 2007 (on-going)
Over a hundred photos reveal the challenges encountered by people with hearing impairment in Hong Kong and China. A stigma-free environment and social understanding are foundations of a harmonious society. The exhibition aims to impart to students a better understanding on the needs of the hearing impaired as well as the social costs incurred.

Education talk on ear health can be arranged upon request.

Shijiazhuang Mission
24 to 27 October 2007

Leading otorhinolaryngologists from China and Hong Kong volunteered on this charity mission to Shijiazhuang, a city in Hebei to provide training to the local doctors and operate on needy patients with ear diseases. More than 150 doctors attended the academic programme on 24 and 25 October which provided a platform for them to stay abreast of advances in surgical and clinical development. A hearing test for children in rural area was conducted. This helped to increase the awareness of ear care in terms of screening and treatment in early stages.

Thanks to the support from volunteer doctors, Union Hospital’s "Healing Heart Initiative" and Apple Daily Charitable Fund, Hear Talk Foundation has arranged a 17-year-old, who suffered from a giant vestibular schwannomma, to receive a complex surgery in Hong Kong.

 
 
     
 
Ear Caring for Youth 2007-2008

The Hear Talk Foundation has designed a on-line hearing test based upon the research data on Phase I of the Youth Ear Care Project in September 2006. The second phase of the project was a joint effort with the International Association of Lions Clubs District 303 – Hong Kong & Macau, China. An opening ceremony cum health talk was held on 24 September 2007 in the Church of Christ in China Yenching College.
 
 
     
 
Health Talk on ‘Healthy Ear Healthy Hearing’ in secondary school

Prevention is better than cure.  Hear Talk Foundation values the importance of public health education.  An ear, nose and throat specialist delivered a health talk on ‘Healthy Ear Healthy Hearing’ in Fanling Lutheran Secondary School.  220 junior form students had fun while they were learning the ways to protect ear.
 
 
     
 
‘Share My Song’ Radio Programme

Miss Jacqueline Wai Kuen Law and Mrs Ma, whose child has been suffered from hearing disorder, told their stories in this popular radio programme.  With their sensational sharing, audience can feel the challenges in the lives of hearing impaired people and also embrace the joy of hearing with the songs dedicated by Miss Law and Mrs Ma.

The “Share My Song” radio programme featured Dr Raymond Tsang and Dr John Sung (specialists in otorhinolaryngology and vice chairmen of organizing committee, Fuzhou Mission). The doctors, through their personal experience, was able to bring to the audience a better understanding of the medical condition in China and difficulties encountered by the poor patients.

 
 
     
 
“A Silent World” Photo Exhibition
2 to 3 March 2007
Since 2004, Hear Talk Foundation has actively promoted the “Ear Care Day” in Hong Kong. This year, we organize “A Silent World” photo exhibition at the World Trade Center, Causeway Bay. Hundreds of photos showed the previous activities of the Foundation as well as life of people with hearing disorders in Hong Kong and the Mainland. Music performances were staged to raise the public awareness of hearing protection. Audience may also seek professional advice from the volunteered audiologists.
 
 
     
 
Speech Screening Day for Children 2007

A speech screening event provided a better understanding of Cantonese phonology, common articulation error and speech therapy to parents and teachers. Children also had fun while they had screening with speech therapists.

Fuzhou Mission
22 to 26 November 2006
This charity mission for ear surgery is the largest of its kind in China. More than 30 ear, nose and throat specialists, nurses from Hong Kong and China joined hands to operate on approximately 100 poor patients with ear diseases in China. Free surgeries include minor to major ear operations, including tympanoplasty, ossicular chain reconstruction, stapedectomy, cochlear implantation, mastoidectomy..

Other than providing free surgeries, the Institute of Human Communicative Research, the Hear Talk Foundation and the Hong Kong Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery also organized academic forum on ear, nose and throat specialty and workshop on speech rehabilitation to facilitate exchange of experience with medical experts and rehabilitation personnel in Fuzhou.

 
 
     
 
‘Help Me Talk Right’ Seminar

To enhance the public awareness towards children speech problem, a seminar, sponsored by the Hongkong Bank Foundation District Community Programme, was jointly organized by the Institute of Human Communicative Research of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hear Talk Foundation. There were about 200 teachers, parents and children aged 3 to 12 participating in the event.
 
 
     
 
Ear Caring For Youth
26 to 30 September 2006
To raise awareness of hearing protection amongst youth, the Hear Talk Foundation and the Bauhinia Junior Chamber jointly launched a pilot health project 'Ear Caring for Youth'. A one-stop ear and hearing assessment was provided to 327 secondary students from 26 to 30 September 2006. A health talk on 'Healthy Ear, Healthy Hearing' was also conducted in the event.
 
 
     
 
Seminar on Promoting Oral Language of Hearing-Impaired Children

Since there is increasing number of hearing-impaired children who receive diagnosis and treatment at early stage, they have to develop good listening and oral communication skills in order to integrate into community. The seminar was well received with about 100 speech therapists, parents, school teachers and related professionals attended.
 
 
     
 
Ear and Hearing Assessment for Elderly

With the voluntary support of United Christian Hospital, ear, nose and throat doctors, audiologists and nurses, the Foundation provided free ear and hearing assessment to 100 senior citizens aged sixty or above.

Luncheon Seminar on ‘Medico-legal Assessment of Hearing Loss and
Related Complaint

The seminars were conducted to explore the medico-legal assessment on the cases of hearing loss and related complaints. Professor Michael Tong, Chief of Otorhinolaryngology, Department of Surgery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Mr Terence Wong, Audiologist-in-Charge, Audiology Centre, Prince of Wales Hospital shared their experience with ear, nose and throat practitioners.

'Live Better Without Communication Barriers' Children's Painting Contest
5 March 2006
About 300 primary school students aged between 8 and 12 participated in the contest on March 5, 2006. The award winning pieces were reproduced as postcards which were sent to 500 deaf children from 20 provinces in China with the assistance of ‘China Association of Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons’.

To reciprocate Hong Kong children’s kindness, deaf children in China sent us their paintings filled with heart-felt blessings.
 
 
     
 
‘March 3 Ear Care Day’ 2006

To promote public awareness on hearing problem and ear protection, ‘Hear Talk Foundation’ has made the 3rd of March as ‘Ear Care Day’ since 2004. To ride on the theme ‘Live Better without Communication Barrier’, a children’s painting contest and education talk on ‘Hearing Loss and Associated Problems in Elderly’ were held in March and April 2006.
 
 
     
 
Chongqing Mission
8 to 11 December 2005
In collaboration with Chongqing’s Southwest Hospital and Hear Talk Foundation, the Institute of Human Communicative Research, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, organized a team of medical professionals to teach local doctors as well as rehabilitation professionals. The team also provided free medical treatments and operations to 100 poor patients with different ear disorders. Besides, Hear Talk Foundation has donated a personal FM System and 24 hearing aids to the Chongqing School for the Deaf to help children learn efficiently.

Hear Talk Foundation announced the findings of the “Ear and Hearing Assessment Project” and called for more public’s attention towards hearing loss problem among the elderly. It was revealed that 34.2% of elderly aged over 60 suffering from hearing loss and one-fifth of them experienced depression.
